ECWCS Gen 3 Level VI Parka, "New OCP," USGI/RFI Issue.
The Level 6 Parka / Jacket is generally considered to be the replacement for the "Old-School" Gore-Tex Jacket from the 1990s which -- in turn -- replaced the M-65 Field Jacket, and brought cold-weather gear into the modern era.
This jacket is not heavily insulated -- it is meant to serve as a hard-shell wind/moisture barrier jacket, on top of other insulated layers (Level 1-2-3).
The Gen 3 Layer 6 Jacket in OCP is seam sealed through every stitch line, making it the package deal. The seam sealing process waterproofs and wind-proofs the jacket while still ensuring breathability. This jacket is designed to take on moderate cold and wet conditions.
The Gen 3 Level 6 is the hard-shell layer of your ECWCS and acts as the water barrier.
